Pastor Marty's Musings...

Lent means spring.  As we know in this neck of the woods, springtime is often both unpredictable and unbelievable.  Tulips stretch up through newly thawed ground only to be covered by another blanket of snow.  A warm sun filled day which may cause us to think “this is it” is often followed by a gloomy day of winter winds howling from the north reminding us that no, winter isn’t done with us yet.  The battle between the seasons, between cold and warmth, sleep and wakefulness, death and new life is fully engaged.

Lent means spring.  Just as there is more to the weather in Minnesota than one snowstorm after another, one record cold snap after another, one dark morning after another, one pot hole after another and one icy patch after another, so too is it true of our journey of faith.  There’s more!  Lots more!  Our faith is dependent on the insight that into a cold, dark, wintery world comes the unbelievable surprise of new life, new hope, new possibilities.

Lent means spring.  Creation necessarily creaks and groans in fits and starts as it moves from one season to another.  Lent points us toward those universal struggles within and without and helps us to see them as the necessary signs of tragedy and triumph that is woven into not just creation, but every human life as well.  During Lent we are called to remember who we are and who God is.  Lent is a season in the church that ties us to centuries of people who knew that these forty days have always called us to stop, look, listen at what God in Christ is up to in our lives and in the world.  Lent is a time to turn and to see as our Lord makes his way to the cross.  Lent is a time to struggle and stretch on our own journey, knowing that as we do, we will experience the deep mystery and the unbelievable surprise that awaits us beyond Lent.

Lent means spring.  Looking outside, I know spring can’t be rushed.  Looking within my own life, I also know it cannot be ignored.

I hope to see you in worship!
